The Destes – Quartz, 12-Hour Sasa Bead Chain, Polished Steel, Blue QW SASA 12B
Wear it or hang it on the wall? This uniquely versatile Sasa wall clock was made for both. It will enhance your decor as an artistic sculpture, and your outfit when you wear it as a necklace. What a conversation starter, imagine telling someone it’s part of your clock.
Its purpose? To help us live in the present moment. Sasa, in African Kiswahili culture means “what is now.” It is believed that by reducing our focus on each minute that has passed or is to come, we can instead live in the present moment. Here’s how the clock works; wooden beads are placed over a slowly turning carousel. Every five minutes that pass, a bead slips down the cord as the carousel rotates. The last bead that has dropped tells us the time. The beads are color coded according to the noon hour, the hours and the minutes, so once you learn how to read it, it’s easy. Now that’s a different and organic way to tell time. And when you want to forget about time, just take the strand of beads off and wear it.
There are four versions available with blue or natural beads, and 12-hour chains or longer 24-hour chains.
The Sasa Clock, designed by internationally acclaimed artiist Thorunn Arnadottir, won the 2010 New York International Gift Fair’s Award for “Best New Product” in the Accent on Design category.
